Netflix’s offline download feature has been around since 2016. Most subscribers don’t use it as effectively as they could — hitting download limits they didn’t know existed, finding titles expired mid-flight, or discovering their device isn’t supported.
Here’s how it actually works, what the limits are by plan, and how to avoid the most common problems.
Which Devices Support Netflix Downloads
Netflix downloads work on mobile devices only. Downloads work via the Netflix app on supported devices including Android phones, tablets, iPhones, iPads, and Chromebooks with Google Play.
What doesn’t work:
The new Netflix Windows app no longer supports downloads — the feature was removed in 2024. There is no rollback to the old app version. Netflix does not support offline downloads on macOS — on a MacBook you can only stream in a browser. Netflix’s smart TV apps do not allow offline downloads.
If you want to watch offline on a TV, the workaround is downloading on a phone or tablet first and then casting or connecting via HDMI.

Download Limits by Plan
Standard with Ads allows 15 downloads per device per calendar month on up to 2 download devices. Standard and Premium ad-free plans allow 100 active downloads per device — Premium supports up to 6 download devices.
| Plan | Downloads Per Device | Max Download Devices |
|---|---|---|
| Standard with Ads | 15 per month | 2 |
| Standard | 100 active | 2 |
| Premium | 100 active | 6 |
Ad-supported plan limits reset on the first day of each calendar month. For standard and premium plans, the 100 download limit refers to active downloads — delete titles to free up slots for new ones.
One additional limit worth knowing: some titles have a limit on how many times they can be downloaded per year. If you receive the alert “You have reached the yearly download limit for this video,” you’ve hit the maximum number of downloads for that specific title — there’s no way to circumvent this and you’ll need to wait for the stipulated period before downloading again.
How Downloads Expire
Downloaded titles typically expire after 30 days, or 48 hours after you begin watching. The 48-hour window starts the moment you press play — not when you download.
Each title’s expiry window varies by license. Netflix treats downloads as non-HDR, non-UHD versions even when the streaming version supports them. The download feature trades away top-tier audio-visual quality and language flexibility in exchange for compatibility and smaller file sizes.
Practical implication: download content close to when you plan to watch it. A title downloaded three weeks before a trip may expire before the flight.
How to Download on iPhone and iPad
Open the Netflix app and sign in. Access the movie or TV show you want to save and tap Download below the title. Alternatively tap the Download icon in front of each episode. You can also turn on the Smart Download feature for optimized downloading.
On iOS, look for Download Season on the show page for one-tap season grabs. This downloads all available episodes of a season in one action — useful before long trips.
Smart Downloads automatically replaces watched episodes with the next unwatched one. Enable it under App Settings to keep your download queue current without manual management.

How to Download on Android
The process is identical to iOS. Open the Netflix app, find the title, and tap the download icon. Android devices running Android 4.4.2 or later with the latest Netflix app installed support downloads.
One Android-specific feature: Downloads for You — launched by Netflix in 2021 — automatically downloads movies and shows Netflix thinks you’ll like based on your viewing history, saving either 5GB, 3GB, or 1GB of storage depending on your setting. Enable it under Downloads in the app settings if you want Netflix to pre-populate your offline library automatically.
Finding Content Available for Download
Not all Netflix titles are available to download. Content availability for download is affected by licensing restrictions — titles from other networks or studios may be blocked even if they are streamable.
To find downloadable content: tap Downloads, then See What You Can Download to browse all titles currently available for offline viewing. Alternatively, look for the download icon on any title page — if it appears, the title is available. If it doesn’t, it isn’t available for download regardless of your plan.
Common Download Errors and Fixes
“You have downloads on too many devices” This error means you’ve reached the maximum number of download devices your plan allows. To fix it, remove all downloads from a different device on your account. Open the Netflix app, go to Account under Settings, tap Manage Download Devices, and tap Remove Device to delete downloads from another device.
“Download Max Reached” Ad-supported plans are limited to 15 total downloads per device per calendar month. This limit resets on the first day of each calendar month. For standard and premium plans, delete existing downloads to free up slots — the 100 limit refers to active downloads, not total downloads over time.
“You have reached the yearly download limit for this video” There’s no way to circumvent this limit — wait for the stipulated period before downloading the title again.
Title expires before you finish watching Downloads expire 48 hours after first play. If you need more time, avoid pressing play until you’re ready to watch. Some titles have shorter expiry windows due to licensing — check the expiry date shown on the download before starting.
Tips for Getting the Most From Netflix Downloads
Download over Wi-Fi only. Enable the Wi-Fi Only setting under App Settings to prevent accidental mobile data usage on large downloads. One HD episode can reach 853MB — a dozen HD episodes can fill significant storage on most phones.
Manage storage proactively. Delete completed downloads immediately to free slots for new content. On the Downloads tab, tap the pencil icon to select and delete multiple titles at once.
Use Download Season for series. One tap downloads all available episodes — faster than downloading individual episodes before a trip.
Check expiry dates before travel. Tap a downloaded title and look for the expiry date shown. If it expires during your trip, re-download closer to your departure date.
Keep the app updated. Make sure the Netflix app is always up to date — some older operating system versions may not support downloads. An outdated app is a common but overlooked cause of download failures.
Stay signed in. You need to stay signed in to your Netflix account to access downloads offline. If your account logs out mid-trip — from an app update or security timeout — downloads become inaccessible until you sign back in. Sign in before boarding.
